The columns and most of the obverse legend are bold. The reverse shows a crisp shield, good clear denomination, and complete IIII ordinal. The C of the mintmark is mushy but present. Overall, the eye appeal is very pleasing for a salvage coin. This piece was the star centerpiece of the first auction offering of coins from the <em>Maravillas </em>salvage, illustrated obverse and reverse with enlargements on the back cover of the catalog. This piece left Cartagena aboard the <em>Maravillas </em>on July 3, 1655, making it a product of the first two weeks of production at the Cartagena mint. Trying to avoid English ships around Cuba, the fleet took port at Vera Cruz until late August and finally left Havana on January 1, 1656. The ship was lost on a reef in the Bahamas just a few days later. This coin stayed there until Robert Marx rediscovered the site in 1972.
