Lot 1971 TIBET: AR ranjana sho 402.96g41, year 3416-1634, Cr-27 var, YZM-360 var, 23.63mm, meaningless date, About Unc, RR, ex George Anderson, Nicholas Rhodes Collections 40Spink Auction 21 Aug 2013 Lot 16141. The tangka coins of this series are known as 34Ranjana Tangkas34 40or 34Rantildejana Tangkas3441 referring to the type of script which is used on both sides. This type of ornamental script is also known as Lantsa-script. The legend represents an invocation of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and good luck.variants of the obverse legends have been noted. All the coins of this type are dated, but some of the dates do not make sense. It is believed that these coins were struck in the late 19th and early 20th Century in Tibet by Nepalese merchants, and that they circulated at the same value as the Kong Par and Gaden tangkas 40see Bertsch, Wolfgang: 34The Tibetan Tangka with Rantildejana Script34, Oriental Numismatic Society, Newsletter, no. 185, autumn, 2005, pp. 18-3141. The basic design of these coins is copied from the silver mohars struck in Kathmandu in the name of Pratap Simha, which were exported to Tibet. Cut pieces showing five florets on the reverse circulated at the value of one sho.
