Extremely Fine, barely visible casting void at top.,Wreathed portrait facing slightly right of Kosciusko as he appeared while fighting in the American Revolutionary war. On a plaque below, in Polish: W 150 CIO LETNIA ROCZNICE PRZYBYCIA DO AMERYKI TADEUSZA KOSCIUSZKI (150 years anniversary of the arrival in America of Thaddeus Kosciusko). The reverse is blank except for PAT APLD FOR, and the heavy wire stand. Handsome portrait of Kosciusko, already a military hero and Polish patriot, and a man of revolutionary aspirations who was sympathetic to the American cause and an advocate of human rights. Upon hearing of the Revolution, he sailed for America in June 1776 to fight on the side of the Americans. Appointed a position in the Continental Army he participated in many battles and used his engineering skills to fortify weak installations and plan new forts and garrisons. He became close friends with Thomas Jefferson, with whom he shared many ideals of liberty and the human condition. He returned to Europe after the war, but left his American estate to be sold for the education and freedom of American slaves. A handsome memento from the sesquicentennial of the arrival in America of the individual often regarded as Polands most famous son.
