“1643” New England shilling fantasy die by C. Wyllys Betts. Brass. 28.8 mm. Extremely Fine.,1643 / XII at center, with legend between circles of beads around, UNIT:COLON:OF:N.ENGLAND. Hand engraved on the planed down reverse of a French Louis XVI sol. Light surface scuffs and scratches on the engraved side, the obverse of the host being smooth, and well worn. A charming fantasy type and seemingly unused as a die as this piece does not show the typical flattening and distortion seen on other Betts dies.
