1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 29-L, W-5075. Rarity-5. Outlined Shield. Fine-15.,146.4 grains. Choice chocolate brown surfaces are smooth and glossy but for several dark patches where planchet impurities once existed and have long since corroded away. This copper is well centered and struck from the usual Die State 2 in which the obverse center is failing, creating a buckling at the center that helped to hasten the wear to the horse head and plow. A pleasing example of this scarcity from the collection of Edward Hessberg, best known for his extensive Connecticut coppers collection sold in the same sale as this Jersey. From the Syd Martin Collection. Earlier Ex our (Stacks) sale of the Edward Hessberg Collection, June 1991, lot 1296; (Ray) Flanigan and (Harry) Garrison; Christopher Young, May 13, 2003.
