Smooth and highly lustrous, the surfaces are bathed in a blend of soft satin luster and vivid golden-rose patina. The 1926 Sesquicentennial of American Independence quarter eagles and half dollars are two of the most popular issues in the U.S. Mints classic commemorative coin series of 1892 to 1954. Through the Act of March 3, 1925, Congress authorized the Mint to produce 200,000 quarter eagles and 1,000,000 half dollars, which orders the Philadelphia facility duly carried out during May and June of 1926. (Additional examples of both denominations were produced for assay purposes.) In light of actual sales to the contemporary public these mintage figures proved wildly optimistic, with 154,207 quarter eagles and 859,408 half dollars eventually being melted as unsold. The resultant net mintage for each issue is 46,019 and 141,120 pieces, respectively (totals include 226 and 528 assay coins).<p>In todays market, both Sesquicentennial issues are regarded as conditionally challenging. Indeed, the quarter eagle, which is easily obtained in grades up to and including MS-64, is seldom offered in Gem MS-65, and rarely any finer.
