1878-S Trade Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS).,This is a delightful Gem, both sides fully struck with pretty reddish-gold highlights to satiny mint luster. Though the Philadelphia Mint struck 1878-dated trade dollars, all of them were Proofs. The branch mints at Carson City and San Francisco, however, were busy striking trade dollars; the Carson City Mints output was modest, just 97,000 pieces, but the San Francisco Mints output for the date was more than 4.1 million coins. Much of the latter mintage was used for overseas export, and survivors in the finest Mint State grades, as here, can be difficult to locate.,PCGS# 7048. NGC ID: 253G.,PCGS Population: 23; 26 finer (MS-68 finest).,
