1889 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC.,This lustrous orange-rose example offers a sharp strike and pleasantly original appearance. 44,070 circulation strike double eagles were coined at the Philadelphia Mint during 1889. Some entered commerce and others were shipped overseas for international trade. As recently as 1982 numismatic researcher and author David Akers wrote "strictly Uncirculated examples are very scarce." In subsequent years, previously unknown pieces came to light in overseas bank hoards, but it appears that the Mint State population was supplemented by just a few hundred additional examples, not by thousands as was the case for some of the more common Philadelphia Mint issues of the 1890s. Scarce even in grades through MS-62, the 1889 is rare any finer and this premium quality example is sure to find its way into an advanced double eagle set.,PCGS# 9010. NGC ID: 2695.,,
