1856-S Gold Dollar. Type II. FS-501. Repunched Mintmark. AU-50 (PCGS).,Subtle silver and rose highlights are seen on both sides of this otherwise honey-gold 1856-S gold dollar. The strike is overall sharp, especially for a lightly circulated survivor of this challenging type. Faint remnants of satiny mint luster support the AU rating from PCGS. The 1856-S is the only Type II gold dollar from the year 1856 and from the San Francisco Mint, and few survivors grade finer than EF. The prominent FS-501 Repunched Mintmark variety accounts for approximately half of the extant population, the first S punched too high and to the right of the primary mintmark.,PCGS# 7536.
