Both sides are smooth, satiny, and brilliant apart from the lightest iridescent toning at the borders. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 commemorates a number of important things: the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean, and the rebuilding of San Francisco after the great earthquake of 1906.
