1817 James Monroe Indian Peace Medal. Bronze. 76 mm. Julian IP-8. First Reverse. MS-64BN (NGC).,Deep caramel brown with slightly lighter areas in the right obverse field and central reverse. Trivial patina breaks on the highest points which is typical of these large medals. A few minor hairlines are noted in the fields. Nice eye appeal and no serious marks of any kind. The medals of Monroe mark a change in die cutters as John Reich was replaced by Moritz Furst who prepared this obverse in late 1818 or early 1819. This medal was struck using the original reverse, dating the impression to before 1846, however it does show minor die rust suggesting it to be from later in this period. Slightly double struck on the obverse.Donated by Stanley DeForest Scott to benefit the endowment campaign for the Executive Director position at the American Numismatic Society.
