1812 Captain William Bainbridge Medal. Bronze. 65 mm. Julian NA-4. Uncirculated Details, Obverse Damage (NGC).,The damage amounts to three easily seen nicks in the upper left field, though they are not so severe as to be overly distracting on this otherwise very nice medal. Rich mahogany brown patina with a bit of light surface debris amongst the letters of the legend. The original dies, this having radial cracks on the rim over the second L of GULIELMUS and over the N of BAINBRIDGE, which later forms a rim cud on this die. The reverse has a small diagonal rim break pointing to the top of the water line at right. This break is visible on the plate of the original silver medal we offered in January 2009. Quite scarce.Donated by Stanley DeForest Scott to benefit the endowment campaign for the Executive Director position at the American Numismatic Society.
