1879-CC Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-50 (NGC).Impressive absolute and condition rarity for this key date issue. Overall sharply defined, both sides exhibit bright honey-gold patina to appreciably lustrous surfaces. A scant 10,708 double eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint, and survivors are scarce even in lower circulated grades. Most of the 250 to 350 coins that we can account for grade no finer than EF. While the persistent buyer will encounter the occasional AU, Mint State examples are more imagined than real as far as most collectors are concerned. This superior quality survivor would make an impressive addition to any gold cabinet.
