Fr. 1192. 1882 $50 Gold Certificate. PMG Very Fine 30.A rare large brown seal variety on this 1882 Gold Certificate series with Track & Price showing just 20 examples listed in their census information. Four of that total are permanently impounded in institutional collections forever unavailable to collectors. This Very Fine 30 graded note is the only piece graded at this level by PMG and just two pieces grade finer with an Extremely Fine 45 EPQ note being the best available. The most recently offered in auction was the PMG 45 EPQ note which brought $188,000 in our August 2014 ANA sale. This Very Fine note shows quite closely to that piece in terms of appeal and will be had for a significantly lower cost. PMG mentions "Minor Restorations," in the comments section of the holder which are nearly undetectable unless viewed under heavy scrutiny. The 1882 series Gold Certificates across all denominations are revered by collectors and typically the later varieties incorporating the small red scalloped treasury seal are all that are routinely available. All that show with large treasury seals are scarce to rare and this Rosecrans - Huston large brown seal is just that. Appealing gold under-prints are seen at the face providing protectors at the serial numbers and the large word "GOLD," at top center. The all important back design shows printed in the famous orange color of large size Gold certificates with ornamental design features and the frequently seen Bald Eagle which in this case is at right with wings spread. A note that will certainly gather significant attention from collections.
