CHINA. Pattern Dollar Struck in Silver, Year 18 (1929) Fine Reeded Edge. Struck in Austria at the Vienna Mint.L&M-97 var.; Kann-647 var.; KM-Pn101 var.; Chang-CH193 var. In 1929 the Chinese Ministry of finance ordered a new design for the then proposed Dr. Sun Yat Sen Dollar. Patterns were submitted from five of the worlds leading mints: Italy, Japan, England, United States, and Austria.
This represents the proposal from the mint in Vienna, Austria engraved by Richard Placht. Upon completion, the various mints shipped the dies as well as samples of the new patterns to China. Many of the patterns were re-struck in China at the Hangchow Mint, which accounts for their availability today. <br /> This piece is EXTREMELY RARE in that it was actually minted at the Vienna Mint in Austria. Evidence of this is easily seen when one examines the edge and notices the fine quality of the edge reeding as well as the execution in the strike. Normally this pattern is found struck with a course edge reeding that is somewhat rounded. These pieces were struck in China at the Hangchow Mint. The vast majority of the “Austrian” Patterns were actually struck in China, with only very few pieces actually being struck at the Vienna Mint. <br /> This piece was discovered in Austria as part of the Richard Placht Estate, engraver at the Vienna Mint and engraver of this pattern. Placht was responsible for engraving several important Chinese patterns including the “Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum Dollar”, the facing portrait “Sun Yat Sen Junk Dollar”, the dollar present here, and the corresponding minor denominations.
Like many medalists and die engravers, the late Richard Placht saved copies of his art work for his own personal collection. In fact, the famous collector and author Eduard Kann met with Richard Placht on at least one occasion in order to obtain information for his book, “Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Coins”. Kann was able to purchase some very important coins the Placht has kept for this own collection, including the unique year 18 facing portrait Sun Yat Sen Dollar.
A majority of the information available to the numismatic community today regarding the Austrian Mint patterns comes directly from correspondences between Richard Placht and Eduard Kann. VERY RARE and historically significant with an extremely interesting and important provenance. Dark, toned.NGC MS-61.
