This EXTREMELY RARE issue was struck under the authority of General Tso Tsung-tang, issued for the purpose of military payments for operations in Shensi, Kansu and Sinkiang. Although this type is undated, research suggests a minting of approximately 1878. The principal function of this issue served as soldiers pay for forces fighting against the Muslim rebellion of Yakub Beg during the Dungan revolt.
Produced for a very brief period of around a year at Lanzhou, the capital city of Kansu province using equipment for manufacturing bullet cartridges located at the Lanzhou Arsenal. Highly important as this coin represents one of the earliest machine struck silver issues of this region. Its rate of exchange correlated to one silver mace per one hundred copper cash.
A similar example in identical grade sold in Champion February 2010 auction for $31,050.00
Attractive old blue toning with golden highlights.NGC AU-55.Wa She Wong Collection
