CHINA. Kiangnan. 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), 1897. Heaton Mint Proof Striking with Plain Edge.L&M-210; Kann-66; KM-Pn2; Sweeny-CN22s; Chang Foundation-pg.172 #80; Wenchao-pg.418 #638 (rarity three stars). The Heaton Mint at Birmingham was commissioned in 1897 to produce a series of five silver denominations for the Nanking Mint. Upon completion, a small number of proof strikes along with sets of dies were shipped to the mint in Nanking. After their arrival the mint began production using the original Heaton Mint design, the only modification being the addition of a security edge. <br /> Most reference works refer to this issue as a plain edge proof striking. While this is correct, more importantly it is a pattern or prototype of what became the adopted design. Truly an exceptional coin that is without question one of the highlights of this collection.
Its deep mirror-like surfaces and lightly frosted devices give it a two tone cameo effect that is remarkable. This is one of the most attractive coins in this collection and one of the most beautiful coins this cataloger has been privileged to handle.NGC PROOF-66 Cameo.Wa She Wong Collection
