CHINA--EMPIRE. Imperial Bank of China. 10 Taels, 22.1.1898. P-A48r.(S/M#C293-4a) Remainder perforated cancelled by Barclay & Fry.. Shanghai. One of the highlights of this fine banknote offering and a design we have never previously handled in any form. This 10 Taels design is seen in a considerably larger format then the lesser denominations while showing the same basic design type. A violet bordering design with ornate framework surrounds an ochre colored under-printing with red protector "Ten, Taels," at center and red vignette of two Dragons supporting shield with pearl of wisdom above. Black signature at Acting, Chief Manager title. Back design found with identical Dragon vignette at top center and seen entirely in Chinese with the same bordering design. Nicely watermarked paper and seen with paper quality that would satisfy any collector. Clear originality is noticed and broad even borders help confirm the lofty Gem designation applied by PMG. Currently the only piece they have graded for this catalog number in any form and a piece likely missing in even the finest of collections.PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ
