1778-1779 (Circa 1780) Rhode Island Ship Medal. Betts-563, W-1740. Wreath Below Ship. Brass. MS-62 (PCGS).;208.5 grains. We are pleased to be offering multiple examples of this Rhode Island Ship medal type in this sale. The present lot features a handsome Mint State piece with plenty of original antique gold color beneath an overlay of mottled gray-brown patina. The side with Lord Howes flagship is the more vivid of the two, but both are equally well defined with universally bold striking detail. Satiny in texture with an overall smooth appearance, a few minor handling marks and ancient carbon deposits are all that seem to preclude a Choice grade. Technically sound, visually appealing, and worthy of a solid bid.;From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. From our (Bowers and Merenas) Estates of Philip M. Mann, Jr. and Glenn B. Smedley sale, September 1988, lot 3031. Lot tag and collector envelope with provenance notation included.
