1857 James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal. First Size. Mule with Settler/Indian Reverse. Bronzed Copper. 75.9 mm, rims 6.3 to 6.8 mm thick. Julian IP-36. Choice Mint State.;Choice reflective rich brown mahogany patina with multicolored iridescence apparent, particularly on the reverse. Very minor spotting on the obverse, still an especially choice example. This piece is of interest particularly because the Mint used the old reverse of the earlier Franklin Pierce and Millard Fillmore Indian Peace medals instead of the then-current reverse featuring the plowing scene because the new die was still in the possession of the designer when these medals were struck. This die combination was only used for examples produced for collectors, and none of this type were presented to Native Americans. Rare.;Ex Fred S. Werner, October 4, 1966; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stacks) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XVIII, May 2007, lot 148. Lot tag included.
