1839-D Liberty Half Eagle. EF-45 (PCGS).;Light and even olive-gold patina characterizes this example of an important one-year type in the Dahlonega Mint half eagle series. Central definition is quite good, especially on the reverse where much of the eagles plumage is sharp. This is an appealing coin for the grade that is worthy of a solid bid. Not only is the 1839-D the first Dahlonega Mint issue in the Liberty half eagle series, but it is the also only one that displays the D mintmark on the obverse. Survivors from a mintage of 18,939 pieces are scarce, and the present example is the finest in quality obtainable for most collectors.;From our (Stacks) T. Henry Allen Collection sale, February 1977, lot 822. Lot tag included.
