1838-C Classic Head Half Eagle. McCloskey-1. AU Details--Cleaning (PCGS).;Offered is an overall sharply defined 1838-C Classic Head half eagle with relatively pleasing warm, even, olive-orange color. Wispy hairlines explain the PCGS qualifier, but there are no sizable or distracting marks. The popular 1838-C is the first Charlotte Mint half eagle and the only one of the Classic Head design. The mintage is a scant 17,179 pieces, and most have long since been lost to commercial use. Scarce to rare in all grades, the 1838-C has an extant population of fewer than 300 coins, most of which grade no finer than VF. Difficult to find with such sharp detail remaining, this more affordable AU is sure to see spirited bidding from both Southern gold specialists and collectors who focus on the Classic Head half eagle series of 1834 to 1838.;From our (Stacks) T. Henry Allen Collection sale, February 1977, lot 818. Lot tag included.
