1801 Draped Bust Half Dollar. BB-214, B-4. Rarity-4. EF-45 (PCGS).;By the year 1800 the bullion value of a silver dollar exceeded its face value, and as a result mintages began declining rapidly. For 1801, a mere 54,454 silver dollars are reported as struck, perhaps as many as a third of those dated 1800. As such, dollars dated 1801 are quite a bit scarcer than other early years. Few are found in high grades and more often than not, high-grade examples have surface or striking issues. The presently offered dollar has elegant steel-gray fields and lighter silver devices and is framed with rose and blue at the peripheries. There are no surface detriments, just smooth even wear and the coin retains nice eye appeal for an 1801 silver dollar.;
