1796 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. B-2, BB-63. Rarity-4. Small Date, Small Letters. EF-45 (PCGS).;Attractive lilac patina graces the devices of this boldly struck early dollar with steel-gray surfaces. Flecks of cobalt nestled among the stars "pop" under a light and add further visual interest. A touch of softness is noted at the bottom of the eagles tail feathers and claws, but definition is quite pronounced otherwise. The obverse is struck very slightly out of center towards the top, evidenced by more pronounced denticles at the bottom, but the reverse is centered perfectly. In Choice EF, as here, 1796 dollars are legitimately scarce, and are rare in AU or finer, making this an idyllic example for most collectors.
