Though the school was founded in 1803, Czar Peter I (The great) knew the importance of "Forest art" and authored the first law regarding this matter. The Forest Institute was the first higher learning institution in Russia for forestry and recruited the help of many well-known scientist both domestic and foreign. Due to the industrialization of forest science in 1929 the forest institute was reorganized into the Forest Technical Academy and became a large Polytechnic University training specialist in the various branches of the industry. In 2013, the institution now called the St. Petersburg State Forest Technical University (FTU) celebrated its 210th Anniversary.
