Anna is often regarded as the worst ruler in Russian history, concerning herself with extravagant entertainments, crude amusements and had little interest in government affairs.
In 1710 she married Frederick William, Duke of Courland who was the same age, but who died on the return journey to Jelgava. She never remarried. She would rule the province of Courland for nearly twenty years before ascending the Russian throne. Once she became Monarch she abolished the Supreme Privy council and relied heavily on her sometimes lover Ernst Johann Biron who had a reputation for cruelty, tyranny, exploitation and corruption.
There are many instances where the title of worst ruler is fitting for Anna, but she also made positive advancements for her country which are somewhat overshadowed by her indifference to governing. In 1731 she founded the Cadet Corps which trained young boys from the age of 8 for the military. She also continued to fund the Russian Academy of Science which was founded by her uncle Peter I and during her reign she was a firm supporter of the arts and the Academy of Science began to include theater, architecture, engraving and journalism which laid the foundations for what is now the world-famous Russian Ballet. The execution of this EXTREMELY RARE and possibly UNIQUE medal is outstanding with the fine details of the obverse and reverse defined and impressive. Minor contact marks with flashy proof-like surfaces subdued with light wispy hairlines. Lightly toned, well struck and highly attractive..PCGS MS-61 Secure Holder..PCGS #308982..
