S-PS3; Fr-386, 387a & 389a; WR-280, 303 & 343 KM-PS5. A stunning complete 1839 Proof set featuring the most desirable and beautifully rendered coin of Victoria, the famous pattern Una and the Lion 5 Pound. Accompanying this prized rarity are all denominations from the Farthing to the Sovereign, including the Maundy set. The set has clearly been together since it was issued, likely stored in the original box for much of that time as indicated by the nicely matched patinas. Though the box is no longer present, the coins have been handled carefully over the years. All are graded by NGC, which clarified edge variants only on some holders, which we have noted below.

Five Pounds. Proof-63 Ultra Cameo. Brilliant gold with boldly reflective mirrors and frosty devices that handsomely showcase the William Wyons classic design. A few faint hairlines in the fields but a magnificent coin, nonetheless. Six full scrolls on front fillet and eleven leaves on rear fillet with "DIRIGE" legend.Sovereign. Plain Edge. Proof-64 Cameo. Brilliant gold with reflective fields and satiny devices. Light hairlines, but fine die finishing lines are also noted in the fields and not to be mistaken as anything other than as made.Half Sovereign. Plain Edge. Proof-64 Ultra Cameo. Brilliant gold with just a trace of deep golden brown and blue. Strong contrast between the devices and fields.Crown. Proof-65 Cameo. Boldly reflective fields and satiny devices. Smokey gray and russet near the centers with vibrant violet and blue near the rims.Half Crown. Plain Edge. Proof-65. Strong satin-finish devices against mirrored fields. Rich rose, violet and steel blue iridescence over much of the surface.Shilling. Plain Edge. Proof-66 Cameo. Bold eye appeal accentuated by the strong cameo contrast and vibrant toning. Soft olive dominates the portrait while vivid blue, rose and green highlight much of the remaining surface.Sixpence. Plain Edge. Proof-66. Toned nearly identical to the shilling and equally attractive. Though not identified as such, good contrast is seen between the fields and satin devices.Fourpence. Proof-63. A gentle rim bump accounts for the grade, but the eye appeal is still excellent. Rich mottled blue, violet and russet toning.Penny. Bronzed. Proof-65BN. Dark chocolate brown with generous soft blue overtones. Boldly reflective and very attractive. One tiny spot is noted nestled beneath Britannia.Halfpenny. Bronzed. Proof-64BN. Stunning deep chocolate brown with just a trace of pale blue. A small spot of verdigris in the ear. Bold mirrors and superb eye appeal.Farthing. Bronzed. Proof-66BN. Sharp and satiny on the devices with boldly mirrored fields around. Dark chocolate brown with pale blue overtones.Maundy Fourpence. Proof-65. Golden gray and rose on the obverse with delicate blue-grey mottled on the reverse.Maundy Threepence. Proof-65. A visually striking gem with mottled blue, gold, rose and green iridescence.Maundy Twopence. Proof-65. Delicately mottled blue-green, gold and rose. Another lovely gem.Maundy Penny. Proof-65. Rich violet, rose, blue and gold toning mottled over both sides. Superb eye appeal, consistent with the rest of this lovely set.

All the pieces are housed in slightly older generation NGC holders, with serial numbers that further indicate the originality of this complete set. All were clearly submitted for grading at the same time. A truly remarkable and desirable property, highlighted by one of the most famous rarities of English numismatics. The condition and eye appeal can hardly be paralleled and must be seen to be believed.NGC PROOF-63 (2), PROOF-64 (3), PROOF-65 (7), & PROOF-66 (3).
