The stated qualifier, in fact, concerns only a light, seemingly old cleaning that is most readily evident in the right obverse field, where a concentration of wispy hairlines is noted. The 1846 may be among the more plentiful 1840s silver dollars in Mint State, but we stress that all such issues are scarce to rare at this level of preservation when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics.
