<p>In the 1940s the Bureau of Engraving and Printing sought out to test a special new paper. To conduct the test, the BEP issued 1.184 million 1935A Silver Certificates with a new special paper formula with the letter "S" in red located at lower right. The "S" stood for special paper while the control group which was the existing paper used was labeled with "R" for regular paper. Including in the 1.184 million notes issued were 12,000 replacement star notes. These notes are rare in any grade and just a handful have been graded Gem. It is estimated just 25 star notes are known for the "R" in all grades combined. PMG has graded just five with one finer. A great small size rarity. </p><p></p>,
