Struck to commemorate the ratification of the previously negotiated 1911 resolution into a treaty which granted Mexico a total of 437 acres of disputed territory. The resolution had origins dating as far back as 1866. In exchange, the US received the 193 acre island also known as Cordova Island. The end of the 100 year old dispute came immediately after the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, and was rooted in the desire of the Kennedy administration to maintain Mexican neutrality during the Cold War.
