Armored bust of King right, holding globus cruciger and sword, 23 provincial crowned heraldic arms and legend in two lines divided by beaded boarder; Reverse: Crowned arms of Sweden (Kalmar Union) and Folkung lion alternating with the seal of the house of Vasa superimposed in the center, legend around in three lines divided first by a beaded boarder than by a single line. After his release from prison in 1567 Johan joined forces with the opposition during the last few years of the Northern Seven Years War or the Nordic seven years war (1563-70) against his mentally unstable half-brother Eric XIV, deposed of him and made himself king. In 1586 after years of negotiating with Rome, Johan brought up Lutheran himself nominated his son Sigismund who had been raised Catholic to ascend the vacant Polish throne and who finally assumed the throne in 1587. Light smoothing in the fields done long ago now toned over with light attractive grey toning which deepens towards the edges. Nicely struck and highly attractive. NGC EF-45.
