From 822, the You Zhou (within modern Hebei) area enjoyed virtual independence from the rest of the empire. At the end of the ninth century, the Regional Commandant of You Zhou was Liu Rengong, succeeded by his son Liu Shouguang from 911. The histories say that Liu Rengong minted iron coins. We have handled only a few of these types in iron and all were heavily encrusted, as is this example. This is the first example in bronze we have seen and it is possible the bronze types are seed coins for the iron types.
