CEYLON. Government of Ceylon. 10,000 Rupees, 15.10.1947. P-39As. Specimen. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58.In world paper money, there is a select number of so-called titans, notes with denominations well above the normal values in circulation at the time. Most often, they were intended for interbank transfers only and were not typically used by the general public. Not surprisingly, surviving examples are extremely rare, regardless of the country or time period, and most are encountered only in specimen or trial form. This is also the case with the 10,000 Rupees of Ceylon offered in this lot. According to most references, a small number of specimens are known of this issue, and to date, this is the sole example in the PMG population report. We have never offered an example before, and the best world paper money collectors of the last half century (or longer) have failed to acquire an example of this type. <p>Like the rest of this series, the 10,000 Rupees was printed by India Security Press, without imprint. The front features a portrait of King George VI en face at left. The back features a view of the shoreline of Kandy Lake at the center. Both sides feature text in English, Sinhala, and Tamil, reflecting the various languages in use in Ceylon. This type seems to have first been produced as a proof dated 1946, with different colors (illustrated in the Banknote Book), before the final iteration of the type seen here, dated 1947, was made. Light handling accounts for the grade, though it seems overly harsh; the appearance and paper quality, including color, are strong, vibrant, and original. While we could write another paragraph about how rare or special this note is, suffice it to say that this is a note that many would have never expected to see appear at auction, a tremendous rarity, and one of the highlights of this sale. From the Bay of Bengal Collection.
