(t) CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Russo-Asiatic Bank. 2000 Rubles, 1917. P-Unlisted. S/M#O5-92. PMG Very Fine 25.

Harbin. The first in an extremely rare trio of emergency notes issued by the Russo-Asiatic Bank. Overprinted on bank checks of the institution, with additional signatures and handwritten elements. Issued at Harbin in 1917, when, with Russia engulfed in a Civil War, the bank had to take extraordinary measures in order to have currency available for issuance at its Harbin office in China. These emergency notes are likely to have all been redeemed and destroyed shortly afterwards, accounting for their rarity in todays market. It should be noted that notes had not been issued by either the Russo-Asiatic Bank or its predecessor, the Russo-Chinese Bank, in Harbin due to Harbins status in Manchuria. Among the highest recorded valuations in the entire catalogue as well.Five denominations are believed to have been prepared: 500 Rubles, 1000 Rubles, 2000 Rubles (offered in the present lot), 3000 Rubles, and 5000 Rubles. This series is entirely unlisted in the Pick catalogue and most other references. They were, however, known to Kardakoff in 1953 as they appear in his catalogue (page 256), but with little other information. Kardakoff prices all notes at 100 German Marks each, among the highest recorded in the catalogue. It is unclear whether he ever saw these notes or only learned of them from other collectors.

They are also listed in Smith & Matravers (published in 1970) as (R) for Reported and not seen. The three notes in the present collection trace their pedigree to the Marquess of Bute, who collected Russian emergency notes either during World War I or shortly afterwards. Until 1970, there were only a handful of collectors of banknotes worldwide, but at that time, Albert Pick was beginning to publish, and Stanley Gibbons Currency Limited had been founded by the late, great Colin Narbeth, and interest was picking up. In 1970, Douglas Liddell, then the General Manager of Spink & Son, recalled that the Marquess had purchased notes from the firm between the First and Second World Wars. Accordingly, after he contacted the family, the collection, some of which had been affected by water intrusion during a World War II bombing, came to that firm. Then, ten years later, in May of 1980, collector William Barrett purchased the entire existing collection, including the Russian, in effectively intact condition. While most of the notes were sold in 1984 to the British Museum, these provisional notes were not part of the sale and remained in the Barrett collection. The only two notes ever made publicly available were sold by Stacks Bowers as part of the John E. Sandrock collection in January 2024: The first, the 500 Rubles, brought $48,000, and the second, the 1000 Rubles, brought $50,400. Now, two years later, we offer Chinese and Russian collectors an opportunity to acquire the other three denominations of this exceptionally rare emergency issue. The present offering represents a spectacular opportunity to acquire any of these museum-calibre notes. PMG Comments Cancelled, Pinholes.
