Approximate AGW: 11.70 oz. Yuan Ji (private bank name) at center, Treasure at either end, reverse stamped twice. A charming and elusive hefty gold issue, delivering impressive sheen and shimmer, with only modest touches of handling and a sticker on the bottom side 101. Brightly lustrous and beaming with originality, this ingot is certain to command much attention, particularly when considering the shipwreck history. Linked to the Nanking Wreck. The Dutch merchant ship VOC Retouschip Geldermalsen - built in 1742 - foundered on a coral reef in the South China Sea in 1752, killing 80 of the crew with only 32 surviving. A total of over 800 thousand Gulden in commodities was lost; 147 10 Tael gold bars, over 100,000 pieces of Chinese blue and white porcelain as well as tea, spices, textiles, lacquer wares and other trade goods. The wreck was recovered in 1986 by English divers and auctioned later that year by Christies Amsterdam.
