广东省造光绪元宝七钱三分反版银样币。广东造币厂。(t) CHINA. Kwangtung. 7 Mace 3 Candareens (Dollar), ND (1889). Kwangtung Mint (struck from Heaton Mint dies). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS MS-64.
L&M-123; K-16; KM-Y-198; WS-0931; Wenchao-552 (rarity: ★★★★); Chang Foundation-90. Arising from the most coveted and earliest issue of the Kwangtung Mint, noted for its failure on account of both its weight and legend placement. The overweight nature of the series, initially intended to drive lesser weight foreign silver out of circulation, instead consigned many examples to a fate at the melting pot. The placement of English and Chinese legends on the same side also proved immensely unpopular, and future series rectified both faults leading to this types lasting infamy to be forever known as a "Seven Three Reversed Pattern". The present example provides entrancing tone, that hugs the surfaces in a warm embrace. The fields and devices are largely unplagued by hit or mark, and altogether this Dollar presents exceptionally well. One of the most important Chinese Dollars, and a RARITY that stands as a type that is ceaseless sought, particularly at this elevated grade level.
From the Robin C S Cheng (鄭鎮新) Collection.
