(◊) DENMARK. 4 Mark (Krone), 1659. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-61.Dav-3576; KM-221; Hede-100A; Sieg-53.1; Schou-33. Amongst the finest graded of this evocative crown type, struck to commemorate the failure of the Swedish king, Carl X Gustav, to capture Copenhagen. The monogram of King Frederik III is shown above a stone with the text EBEN EZER, referring to the Old Testament passage, 1 Samuel 7:12, in which Samuel erected a "stone of help" (Eben-ha-Ezer) between Mizpah and Jeshanah to honor the Lord for his help in securing the Israelites a victory over the Philistines. The Latin inscription on the reverse, SOLI DEO GLORIA, is another tribute to God ("To God alone be the glory") while the dramatic design shows the hand of God (Manus Dei) severing the hand of the Swedish king with the sword of justice as he reaches out for the Danish crown. Light gray tone is pleasantly backlight by a bold underlying mint frost. Sharply struck and beautifully preserved, there are just two graded MS-61 at NGC with a mere three pieces finer, making this one a standout; it should be noted that an AU-58 (NGC) sold for 5,750 Euro hammer in our February 2025 Collectors Choice Auction. No doubt this one will bring more
