NORWAY. 4 Speciedaler, 1678. Christiania Mint. Christian V. NGC EF Details--Edge Filing.Dav-A3654; KM-129; Hede-32B; Sieg-56.2; NMD-34; Schou-4; Bruun-10209. Weight: 114.19 gms. Mintmaster: Peter Grüner, the Younger (PG). The noted edge filing apart, this piece with its excellent details and strong portrait, is in an exceptional overall condition for a Quadruple Speciedaler, as these are almost always marred by severe surface marks due to the massive weight of the coin.
Of the utmost rarity and importance. Thesen has recorded a total of 10 examples of Quadruple Speciedalers from Christian V, minted in 1674, 1678, 1679 and 1680, of which only four are privately owned. The remaining six are to be found in public collections in Oslo, Copenhagen and St. Petersburg.
The presumably only other privately held exemplar of the 4 Speciedaler 1678 was also owned by Bruun who had acquired it from Guildal. Keeping the present - and best - exemplar in the main collection, the duplicate was sold in the 1925 auction for 730 DKK to Virgil Brand through Spink. For many years this piece held the world record for the most expensive Norwegian coin after being sold at Riibe Auction 18, lot 37 in 2005.From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
Ex: Peter v. Hemmert Collection (Copenhagen - 1807) Lot # 1195.
