1820 Matron Head Cent. N-15. Rarity-2. Small Date. MS-63 RB (PCGS). CAC.Noyes Die State B/B. Original mint red has faded to warm orange blended with lightly mottled steel-brown. The obverse retains about 50% of the original color, while the reverse exhibits even more. Both sides are boldly lustrous with a fresh appearance that is typical of the Randall Hoard coins, which this almost certainly is. The Twin Leaf Part I coin (Stacks Bowers, July 2015:2082) was a beautiful piece, but did not have nearly the color of this specimen. It also lacked the provenance of the currently offered piece, which hails from the famous Norweb family cabinet and can be traced back to 1908.<p>An example of the late states of these dies. On both sides the die wear is clearly evidenced by strong flowlines and weakened dentils. However, the most distinctive feature is the extensive fine die spalling distributed over most of the portrait and through the center of the reverse.PCGS# 36704. BASE PCGS# 91616.
