Fr. 2011-B. 1950A $10 Federal Reserve Note. New York. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. Doubled Print Error.Starting in the 1950s through the 1980s, the Bureau of Engraving & Printing was the origin of many great errors that continue to captivate the interest of collectors. From legendary errors such as the Fr. 2071-K Double Denomination errors that were distributed in the Houston-area to spectacular failures of the quality control process emphasized by Cutting Errors or Printed Foldovers that embody the words "freak" or "error" to the very letter of the definition, this lot is certainly one of the most dramatic errors that one could hope to acquire for their collection. This $10 Federal Reserve Note issued under the Series of 1950A features not one, but two impressions of the Treasury overprint including two distinct serial numbers that offer a visual spectacle bound to be appreciated by even those without a basic understanding of numismatic material.<p>Here one may observe every aspect associated with a doubled Treasury overprint. The Federal Reserve district seal and its associated indicators represent five distinct pairs while a similar phenomenon can be observed with the serial numbers. At left, one may observe two distinct serial numbers with "B34313785D" seen above its counterpart "B34308647D" which is not repeated again at right. To the end, the engraved signatures of Treasurer Ivy Baker Priest and Treasury Secretary George M. Humphrey are also doubled further emphasizing the spectacular failure of the quality control process that further underscores why this same note realized $26,400 in 2018 (a figure well in excess of the initial estimate then) and why it will soon become a highlight of any collection it may enter once bidding ends. This combined with the dramatic nature of the error on this specific example will not only provoke fierce competition among bidders, but will also see this note into the depths of a long-term collection where it will remain for years or even decades before surfacing once again at auction for the consideration of bidders. From the Manhattan Beach Collection.
