Fr. 2100-H*. 1928 $50 Federal Reserve Star Note. St. Louis. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.Representative of a sum of money that once represented a significant portion of ones monthly earnings. This lot offers bidders the chance to acquire a note that would have seen little use outside the confines of a bank or within the context of a large purchase such as a brand new 1930 Ford Model A. Familiar elements such as the grizzled portrait of President Ulysses S. Grant and the back vignette of Capitol Hill betray this note as a representative of the $50 denomination while the grade of Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ does well to emphasize the fact that this piece avoided circulation. Yet, these distinctions are easily trumped by the star seen at the end of the serial number which speaks to the status of this piece as a Replacement. In numismatic terms, Replacements from this period are scarce to extremely rare especially for larger denominations. This piece which represents a Replacement from the St. Louis district is one of a dozen pieces enumerated in the PMG Population Report and among the finest recorded but also outdone by two betters. Even though some may balk at such a distinction, this piece does afford one the opportunity to push the boundaries of their registry set or to represent this type with a premium specimen within their collection for those astute enough to recognize it.
