(t) CHINA. Kwangtung. Brass Cash Pattern, ND (ca. 1890-1908). Uncertain Mint (likely in Europe). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS SPECIMEN-63. KM-Unlisted; CCC-779; Duan-2235. While clearly channeling the Cash-style issues from the previous near-two-millennia, this stunning example also departs distinctly in its crisp, clear manufacture from the most advanced minting technology that the period would allow. Finely styled and produced in sharp relief, with squared devices and rims and swirling luster through the fields, this piece is well-deserving of its Choice designation, with only minor spotting precluding a finer grade. An interesting pattern, the exact origin of which remains unknown. It was certainly not manufactured in China, and most likely produced instead in Europe. That this issue is not listed in many of the references is suggestive of its limited production. Though stylistically a much different product than the Paris mint patterns (CCC-777)--where the characters are larger and more bubbly--this issue also differs from the patterns produced by the Heaton mint in Birmingham (first Kwangtung dragon issues). In the cataloguers opinion Germany would be a likely source, but until more documentation emerges its origins will remain a mystery.
