1787 (1860s) Brasher Doubloon. Kenney-3, W-15105. EB on Wing. Brass. MS-64 (PCGS).The boldly lustrous surfaces of this attractive token resemble gold more than brass, which suggests gilding, and adds greatly to the overall charm either way. One of just 25 examples struck in this composition from dies by Joseph Merriam of Boston, Massachusetts. Our sale of the Choice Mint State Ford specimen (May 2006) realized $2,300 - a satisfactory price for this rare token - while Ted Craiges in MS-60 brought expectedly less at $1,527.50 in our August 2013 Chicago ANA Auction. Absolutely choice for the assigned grade, this PCGS MS-64 should command a stronger price that both of those, especially given the extreme rarity of originals and the high regard that specialist collectors have for anything relating to Brasher and his work.PCGS# 568455.
