1799 (ca. 1800) Repub. Ameri. Medal. Musante GW-62, Baker-69A. White Metal. MS-62 (PCGS).33 mm. Light pewter gray with some deeper patina on the high points of the portrait, the open areas of the field and atop the highest points of the reverse central design. Pleasing soft luster and no serious flaws. Struck in the usually-seen composition for this medal. Essentially an updated version of the 1796 issue (offered in the previous lot) with the obverse die reworked to reflect the birth and death of Washington in addition to the life-accomplishments featured on the reverse, placing the striking of this medal after the news of Washingtons December 1799 passing reached Birmingham. Seeing a merchandising opportunity, Wyon almost certainly set to work quickly to produce this memorial type. From the John M. Pack Collection. Earlier ex John Kraljevich Americana, January 2014.
