1901-S Barber Quarter. AU-50 (PCGS).This 1901-S Barber quarter is both an absolute and condition rarity. Featuring wisps of russet and cobalt blue iridescence, the surfaces of this desirable AU example retain both considerable brilliance and plenty of frosty mint luster. The remaining detail is uncommonly sharp for a circulated survivor of this issue with only light high point wear and field friction confirming the PCGS grade.<p>Although the 1913-S has a lower mintage, the 1901-S is the unrivaled key date in the circulation strike Barber quarter series. Survivors from a production run of 72,664 pieces are scarce to rare at all levels of preservation, and most are in well worn grades such as AG, Good and VG. Problem free VF and EF examples are elusive, solidly graded AU coins such as this even more so. With Mint State survivors of the utmost rarity, the coin offered here is sure to have no difficulty finding its way into an advanced Barber quarter set.PCGS# 5630.
