(t) CHINA. Southern Song Dynasty. Gold Leaf Tael, ND (ca. 1127-1279). VERY FINE. China Numismatic Museum-220. Weight: 37.7 gms. Complete sheet of leaves folded like pieces of papers, stamped in the corners and center on one side. Though somewhat crinkled, this highly interesting example appears to be as intended and intact. The inscriptions are somewhat obscured, with three of the five stamps readable. The surfaces displays an attractive pale gold coloration with faint hints of sunset hues in the crevasses of the some stamps. An attractive example of this seldom encountered artifact that is sure to excite even the most advanced of collectors. The present piece is rather interesting given the fact that it has remained intact after nearly 800 years. It appears that the stamps were applied to the top gold sheet once finished being folded, rather than being added to each individual sheet prior to folding. An intriguing example worthy of further in depth research and comparison from the specialist.
