Pennsylvania. Continental Office Third Bill of Exchange. January 15, 1779. $120 in 600 Livres Tournois. Francis Hopkinson Signature.No. 340. Signed by Francis Hopkinson as Treasurer of Loans. Paper watermarked "United States 3." Continental Loan Office certificates were denominated in dollars and some other European equivalent. They were printed in sheets of four "Bills of Exchange." Upon redemption of the First Bill the other three would be voided, which explains the wording "At Thirty Days Sight of the Third Bill, First, Second, and Fourth not paid…" There are a couple sheets of three that have survived but none are known with all four bills still intact. These fiscal instruments are primarily so popular because virtually all of them are signed by Francis Hopkinson. Hopkinson was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and his signature on any item is highly cherished. From the Richard August Collection.
