The VERY FIRST Struck 24 Karat Gold 2025-W Sacagawea Dollar. 25th Anniversary Commemorative. Proof-70 Deep Cameo (PCGS).More than 1.8 billion dollar coins with the Sacagawea design have been struck since the series first entered circulation in 2000-and this is the single most significant of this entire production. It is the VERY FIRST dollar coin ever struck in 24 Karat gold of a circulating design, and is only the 40th Sacagawea dollar coin produced in any gold composition. The prior 39 coins leading up to this were the 22 Karat gold dollars intended for flight aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS93) and 27 of which have since been melted. As the very next incarnation of this lineage, this #1 struck 24 Karat gold dollar is descended from numismatic royalty and represents a modern American treasure.
This 24 Karat gold series was produced to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Sacagawea dollar, which was first released for circulation in 2000. 25 years-a quarter century-is an impressive milestone by any measure. Termed the Silver Jubilee, its achievement by a monarch is often commemorated by a national celebration, and 25 years of marriage is cause for a Mediterranean cruise or a trip to Hawaii. We celebrate a 25th anniversary because such longevity is very uncommon. This is true for many design types across American coinage, but especially so for the dollar coin. The Sacagawea dollars predecessor, the Susan B. Anthony dollar, was only struck for four years, and the Eisenhower dollar lasted only eight years before then. Even Americas first dollar, the Flowing Hair dollar, was just struck for two years and the Draped Bust type after that spanned only 10 different issues, including the 1804-dated novodels. The Mint hit its stride with the Liberty Seated and Morgan series which each lasted two dozen years or more, but then the majestic Peace dollar was halted after just 10 issues. With 25 years in circulation-and 26 years of production-there is clearly something special about the Sacagawea dollar that speaks to the fundamental American themes of adventure, achievement, freedom.
This 25th Anniversary commemorative features the original and iconic design combination of Gelenna Goodacres Sacagawea portrait on the obvers and Thomas D. Rogers majestic bald eagle in flight on the reverse, as seen on the first generation of these coins from 2000 through 2008. Struck in 1/2oz of 24 Karat 99.99% fine gold at the West Point Mint, they deliver a captivating aesthetic and exceptional rarity fitting for such an achievement. An extremely small mintage of only 7,500 pieces was produced to mark this milestone-a microscopic figure by modern Mint standards. However, this coin is distinctly the most significant and the most desirable of this exclusive group because it is the very first one struck.
The first of anything is universally the most prized and special. First place, a first kiss, and the first bite of a decadent desert standout as the most impactful and exciting of any to follow. The same is true within numismatics. Where the striking order has been documented or can be determined, the very first struck coin is always the most desirable and is often the most valuable of a given series. The unique Specimen 1794 Flowing Hair dollar that sold for over $10 million in our January 2013 auction was likely the very first example struck of Americas first dollar, and this undoubtedly contributed to the world record price. More recently, the #1 struck example of the privy mark 2024 Flowing Hair gold dollar sold for $440,000 in our December 2024 auction-another record price attributable to its status as the very first. It is clear that collectors place tremendous importance and value on the first of a series, and with are honored to build upon this legacy with the VERY FIRST struck 24 Karat Gold Sacagawea dollar presented here in this historic sale.
