NEW YORK. New York. Undated (1833-1839) Robert Lovett Sr., Lovett Seal Engravers. HT-288, Low-263, W-NY-720-10b. Rarity-7. Brass. Reeded Edge. AU Details--Tooled (NGC).25 mm. This is only the sixth example of this extremely rare HT number that we have traced. The finest is the Dice-Hicks specimen, eventually certified MS-62 by NGC, which reappeared in our September 2013 and March 2016 auctions. John J. Ford, Jr. also had one, NGC MS-61, that was offered in our August 2013 Ford XXIII Sale. The Michael Brand Zeddies specimen, probably ex Virgil Brand, sold in our (Bowers and Merenas) November 1990 sale and reappeared in Heritages December 2020 sale of the Donald G. Partrick Collection; certified AU-53 by NGC, it is the CC#3 specimen. An example graded About Uncirculated by the cataloger was offered as lot 3649 in our (Bowers and Merenas) March 2002 Wayne S. Rich Collection sale, while an Extremely Fine appeared as lot 54 in Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Inc.s Auction Seventy-Three of December 2004.<p>The present offering is for an example that retains universally bold to sharp detail throughout the design, but is held back by numerous fine scratches on the obverse that explain the NGC qualifier. Even so, it represents a rare find and fleeting bidding opportunity for the advanced specialist in Hard Times tokens. From the Robert Kaprinski Collection.
