1953 United States Assay Commission Medal. JK AC-98. Rarity-7. Bronze. Edge Inscribed to Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross. MS-66 (PCGS).51 mm. Edge inscribed to HON. NELLIE TAYLOE ROSS at 12 oclock. The 1953 is widely regarded as one of the most elusive entries in the popular Assay Commission medal series. Our online archives include only two offerings: the November 2022 sale for $15,600 of the medal presented to Commissioner Joseph M. Gazzam, Jr. and accompanied by the original Presidential appointment document signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the Sydney F. Martin specimen in PCGS Specimen-64 that realized $7,200 in our March 2025 Collectors Choice Online Auction. This one also sports an impressive provenance to Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross. It is a handsome deep golden-bronze medal with full striking detail and no mentionable blemishes apart from two miniscule carbon flecks in the upper left reverse field. An exciting offering, and accompanied by the original dark green exterior, dark green plush interior case in pristine condition. Inside the case is an original, folded paper describing this medal.
